Overview
What Honorlock does
A complete remote proctoring solution integrated directly into Canvas.
Webcam & audio recording
Records the student's face, audio, and screen for the duration of the exam. Sessions are retained for one year.
Browser lockdown
Prevents students from opening new tabs, switching applications, copy-pasting, or accessing unauthorized resources during the exam.
AI behavioral monitoring
Flags potential violations such as looking away from the screen, multiple faces, cell phone detection, and unauthorized AI tool use.
Live proctor on-demand
Students can request a live human proctor at any time during the exam. Proctors are available 24/7 via in-exam chat.
Identity verification
Students verify identity with a photo ID and complete a room scan before each exam begins.
Session review dashboard
Instructors can review flagged sessions, download recordings, and access AI-generated incident summaries from within Canvas.
For Students
Student setup & what to expect
1
Use Chrome
Honorlock only works in Google Chrome. No other browsers are supported.
2
Install the Chrome extension
You'll be prompted to install the Honorlock Chrome extension when you open the exam in Canvas. Install it once — it works across all Honorlock exams.
3
Complete the Student Prep Tutorial
Your instructor will assign the Honorlock Student Prep Tutorial in Canvas. Complete it before your first proctored exam to verify your setup works.
4
Verify identity & do a room scan
At the start of each exam, hold your photo ID up to the webcam and pan the camera to show your testing environment.
5
Take the exam
The exam opens in a locked browser. A live proctor is available at any time via the chat icon in the lower-right corner.
No suitable home environment?
Students who cannot test from home can use the Campus Testing Center (SZB 5.102). Book at least 3 business days in advance. Notify your instructor at least 10 business days before the exam to arrange an alternative testing location.
Technical issues during an exam?
Use the "Need help?" button in the top-right corner of the exam, or the live chat icon in the lower-right corner. Honorlock support is available 24/7.
For Faculty
Faculty setup
Faculty cannot self-provision Honorlock. Your college or school must be formally opted in through OAT before you can use it.
Check opt-in status first. Honorlock is available at approximately 7 UT colleges and schools. If you're unsure whether your college is opted in, contact OAT at oat@utexas.edu before proceeding.
1
Confirm opt-in with OAT
Contact oat@utexas.edu to confirm your college has enrolled in Honorlock and that you have access.
2
Enable Honorlock in Canvas navigation
In your Canvas course, go to Settings → Navigation and enable Honorlock. It will appear in your course menu.
3
Enable Honorlock for the specific quiz
Open the Honorlock dashboard in Canvas, find your quiz, and click Enable. Do not edit or share the generated access code.
4
Add required syllabus language
Include language in your syllabus disclosing Honorlock use and informing students of the alternate testing location option (10 business days' notice required for student requests).
5
Assign the Student Prep Tutorial
Add the Honorlock Student Prep Tutorial Assignment to your Canvas course and require students to complete it before their first proctored exam.
6
Campus Testing Center (if applicable)
If students may use the Campus Testing Center, submit exam schedules via Canvas RegisterBlast at least 5 business days before the exam.
Academic Integrity
Handling misconduct flags
Honorlock flags suspicious behavior for instructor review — flags are not automatic findings of misconduct.
01
Review the flagged session
Log into the Honorlock dashboard in Canvas and review the flagged recording and AI-generated incident summary.
02
Download & store the recording
If you determine the flag warrants further review, download the recording and store it in UT Box using the naming convention:
YYMMDD-UNIQUENO-STUDENTUTEID03
Follow the Student Conduct process
Submit to the Student Conduct resolution process within 30 days. Instructors may not unilaterally lower grades or restrict Canvas access based on Honorlock flags alone.
